I’m just going to remind you that I live in Wisconsin. There’s cold and then there’s DAMN cold. This past weekend fell into the latter. In an attempt to be “fun mom” I took the kids outside in SUBZERO for a tad-bit too long. Of course, I made sure they had their neck warmers on, but…me, I somehow forgot.
Soon after this I received a gift, a commonly misunderstood malady that I call – Froze the Crap Out of My Airways!
Some of you may have done this before…and, it often manifests into a “chest cold”; or, if you are really lucky, an infection of some sort. I enjoyed it all – the feeling of pins in my chest, the fever/chills, the dance between sore throat and ridiculous head pain, and the finale into bed where I snuggled with my Kleenex box.
Regardless of the category you put it in; how do you heal from this little mishap? Well, after feeling stupid and pitiful; then wondering if maybe I just caught one of the viruses going around; then confirming, no, it really was your lack of winter-gear; you make amends. (Again, I’m not a physician, but I am sharing my personal experiences with you.)
For me, that included a combination of:
Pulsed Magnetic Therapy on my lungs (most of you don’t have this technology at home; but some local clinics do) – it is a LIFE SAVER! PEMF/Pulsed Cellular Exercise/Pulsed Electromagnetics…there are tons of terms for a technology that essentially recharges you. In this particular instance it helped decrease the inflammation in my chest. If your healthcare provider doesn’t have it – they should!
TONS of liquids: lots of water and similar – chamomile tea; warm water with honey and lemon; and bone broths. I was so tired at the time I did NOT make the effort to boil my own, but had my mom pickup some at the store. Desperate times…
Homeopathy and the use of essential oils: many that follow this blog know what I’m talking about. Walk into a natural health foods store or your local chiropractor and I’m sure you can find a slew of tinctures. My husband has specific favorites for our family and for this fun health challenge I took Biocidin (which includes Echinacea, Goldenseal, Noni, Billbery, Milk Thistle…the list goes on..it tastes HORRENDOUS, which means it works.) I also took a lymphatic drainer and a lung tincture.
The best part of this adventure (as I look for silver linings) is that I viewed this as a spa experience. After falling asleep on the Pulsed Magnetic Therapy, I did a steam inhalation. This requires holding my head over a bowl of steamy water with 1 drop of peppermint oil. I know other oils would probably work well for this too, including eucalyptus or tea tree (as they are decongestants and expectorants by nature.) But, I had peppermint oil and it felt incredible.
All of this with as much sleep as possible and voilà, I avoided antibiotics (future blog post: How to Cleanse from Those Nasty-Guys).
As always make sure you have a handy physician that aligns with your values to guide you thru your health challenges. I personally like, this guy: Dr. Schilling and, these guys: Dr. Alenov & Dr. Irestone.
I’d love to hear what works for your family in a health challenge! Comment if you have time.
