I’m NOT perfect, as many of you know. I’m in my early 40s; I have a predisposition to cellulite, belly fat, sugar imbalances (hello Irish ancestry) and weight gain. I ALSO have a tendency to gain muscle quickly. I don’t starve myself, but I do make sure I eat an assortment of healthy foods all year. I eat clean and seasonally – finding whatever mother nature would provide. So, heavier in the fall and winter months. Hence this picture from January! Yes, I am sucking in my stomach. But, do you know what? I’m super FIT in this picture. And, I have the same energy I had in my 20s, as well as an unbelievable immune system.
But, I am as vain as anyone else. And, I do like to “shred” a little for the months where I can’t cover-up as much. Starting in April, and for sure in May, I start “shredding” the excess fat off my body. Again, this NEVER means starving myself. For me it means either a detox program of some sort (gallbladder flush, footbaths, specific nutrients to cleanse) and/or a simple “cleaner” diet. Here is my “tried and true” approach. It’s similar to the Whole30…why didn’t my husband or I write that book?! We have been doing most of that (and more) for 2 decades.
Gluten & Wheat (including GF oats)
Chips of ANY kind (stay away from boxes & bags)
Dairy (with the exception of organic butter)
SUGAR — for the most part
BARS – you know: protein bars, granola bars, any “diet” bar
Soy, MSG, artificial flavors, sweeteners, common-sense stuff
Note: I am not as strict as the Whole30, (I will eat out – just mindfully and at good places; I will have an occasional glass of wine or GIN, I will eat peas and hummus…)
I also make sure I take quality nutrition: multivitamins, C & B vitamins, probiotics, bone broths, oils and liver & kidney support via homeopathy. I increase my “greens” substantially with either more salads and veggies and/or a green drink at least 4 x week. I do have an occasional protein (vegan) smoothie (for lunch if I am rushed) or as an extra meal if I am teaching a lot that day.
I start my morning with a glass of water and probiotic. I then drink warm water with lemon. THEN I drink coffee. I “treat” my NEED for chocolate/sweets with a small amount of organic dark chocolate everyday. Yes, every damn day.
In addition I stop eating after dinner and allow at LEAST 12-16 hours between dinner and my meal the following day. I eat a TON of organic protein, as I workout a lot and I have always found I need more protein than average. I drink a ton of water. Like…a LOT.
This is what has worked for me in the past. What works for me, may not work for you. But, I have been asked and wanted to share what my spring “shred” involved. Take care of your body, eat in moderation and fuel it with nutrient-dense foods. Exercise and challenge yourself physically AND mentally. Sleep well at night and listen to your body. Your intuition will know what feels right.
